I reject the utter black that Christopher Nolan and Grant Morrison cloaked the Batman mythos in with The Dark Knight and Batman R.I.P.--and the cynicism of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns before that.
I reject the criticism heaped on the productions of Jane's Punisher and Cage's Ghost Rider just because those characters aren't self-loathing, soul-less maniacs like the Garth Ennis's would prefer they be.
Heroes don't need to be perfect to be heroes. Otherwise Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, George Lucas, and Terry Goodkind would never have made the impact they did in their genre, Smallville would not be going for nine seasons strong, and Marvel would have no proud legacy.
The cynics and fatalists have a right to their "heroes" and interpretations. That doesn't mean we are obligated to accept them.
